Honda Timing Belt Replacement

The good news is you own a Honda which is one of the most reliable car makes however the bad news is, you might have a timing belt that needs to be replaced! This article aims to help you understand the importance of proper service if your honda timing belt.

How do I know if my honda has a timing belt?

There are many popular models made by Honda that you might own. Whether you drive a Honda Civic, Accord, Odyssey or Pilot, your vehicle will have either a 4 cylinder or v6 made. If your Honda is equipped with a 4 cylinder engine prior to 2004 you will most likely have a timing belt. All Honda V6 engines still use timing belts. Newer Hondas may have a timing chain instead of a timing belt which does not necessarily have a factory replacement interval.

When should I perform a timing belt replacement of my Honda?

Timing belts should be replaced before a failure occurs. Every vehicle may have slightly different intervals depending on your year and model so the best baseline is to refer to you owner’s manual. As a blanket statement, most timing belts are required to be replaced at 105,000 miles according to Honda.

Replacing your Honda timing belt before a timing belt failure is crucial. Honda’s use an interference style engine which means in general terms that if the timing belt breaks, you can have valves make contact with the piston resulting in costly repairs or replacement of an entire engine.

Honda timing belt recommended replacement can also be dependent on “severity” which takes into account, driving style, road conditions and environment conditions. In Queens and Brooklyn vehicles tend to take a pounding. Our roads are unforgiving and we have hot summers and cold wet winters. This can affect the life and integrity of a timing belt that is made of rubber. At Essential Auto Care we recommend our clients to consider replacing their timing belt at around 60,000 - 75,000 miles.

What is included in a Honda timing belt service

When replacing your timing belt, there are several general items that get replaced as well. Every Honda timing belt kit contains a belt tensioner. The timing belt tensioner is important to provide proper tension to the belt. When timing belt tensioners get old and they may not provide the proper tension to the belt which may lead to the timing belt to slip off. If the timing belt slips off, there may be catastrophic damage due to the nature of the interference engine. Idler pulleys can also coincide with the timing belt replacement.

There are other items that may be recommended at the time of your Honda timing belt replacement. Our technicians at Essential Auto Care perform a detailed inspection of your Honda engine and advise if there are any other parts that appear to be at the end of their useful life. One common part that is recommended more times than not is the water pump.

How can I tell if my timing belt has been replaced?

Since Honda’s are such great and reliable vehicles, often times owners buy used Hondas. The best way to know if your timing belt on your Honda has been replaced is if you have detailed service records for the vehicle. If not, there are times when an inspection can be performed of the timing belt tensioner and timing belt to see if there is an indication of newer looking parts. This will still not be a good indication of when the timing belt was replaced or if high quality parts.
